A Lecture and Three Tours

September 14, 15, & 16, 2010

Join us as we explore some of the several hundred extraordinary stained glass windows in metropolitan Chicago designed and made by Charles J. Connick [1913-1945] and Connick Associates [1946-1964].

A lecture will be given at Fourth Presbyterian Church, Chicago, on September 14, and there will be three tours of selected sites in Chicago and Evanston, Ill., on September 15 & 16. The speaker and principal tour leader is British historian Peter Cormack, M.B.E., F.S.A., an honorary director of The Charles J. Connick Stained Glass Foundation Ltd., and a leading historian of the work of William Morris, the English Arts & Crafts movement, and British and American Modern Gothic stained glass.

Tuesday evening, September 14:

Tour and lecture at Fourth Presbyterian Church, 126 E. Chestnut Street, Chicago 5:00 to 7:30 p.m.

  • 5:00–6:00 p.m.       Tour of windows
  • 6:00-7:30 p.m.     Illustrated lecture in church

Wednesday afternoon, September 15:

Tour of Windows in Evanston and Chicago’s Gold Coast 1:00-5:00 p.m.

  • 2:00        First Congregational Church, 1417 Hinman Ave., Evanston
  • [2:20–3:15      Travel to St. Chrysostom, Chicago]
  • 3:15– 5:00      St. Chrysostom’s Episcopal Church, 1424 N. Dearborn Street, Chicago.
  •         Tour of windows followed by reception

Tour in Hyde Park 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Tour of Windows by Connick Associates 1947-1959 at Seabury-Western Chapel, 600 Haven Street, and Northminster Presbyterian Church, 2525 Central Park Ave., Evanston 2:00 - 4:30 p.m.

  • The tour of Northminster Presbyterian Church will be led by David Foote who is preparing a fully-illustrated book on the stained glass windows.
